Conceptual/Developmental Book Editing: In this age of self-publishing, having a discerning set to eyes on your work is essential to creating a work that you are proud of.  (See more info about conceptual editing below.)

What is a conceptual/developmental editor? And who needs one?

In this brave new world of self publishing, authors have to shepherd their own works through the entire publishing process. This includes having a professional eye cast on their books before it goes to press--or to Kindle. The conceptual editor (developmental editor, book doctor or as I like to call myself, Book Midwife) evaluates a work in progress and comes up with a plan to shift and change the book to make it great.

What I do:

What I do is evaluate a book and give an author feedback to make the book as good as it can be.

In a fiction book or a memoir, the evaluation would look at plot, character development, emotional veracity and overall tone and language.

In a non-fiction, the evaluation looks at overall adhesion to the theme, readability, value of content and consistent use of language.

In a how-to book, the evaluation looks at presentation of ideas, value of content and ease of the read.

Usually, I will work with an author through at least three rounds of edits before the book gets to a cohesive and flowing state.

When a author hires me, he or she is really ready to look at the work from the reader's side and it is a very fun ride to change the book and make it great!
